The ongoing war in Sudan has forced over 800,000 people to evacuate their homes in North Darfur state. The conflict has devastated water supplies and aggravated WASH difficulties, leaving more than 800,000 displaced people in Elfasher town without access to clean water. AHA's emergency water trucking intervention has been an important lifeline for IDP communities in Elfasher town, North Darfur, that have been impacted by severe fighting in and around Elfasher. AHA water trucking has allowed more than 50,000 people in these camps to access clean water on a daily basis for drinking, cooking, and other domestic needs, significantly reducing cases of diarrhoea and other water-borne diseases, particularly among children.
Although the number of IDPs is growing and the IDP camps in Elfasher town and surrounding gathering centers are overcrowded, showing a high need for drinking water, many partners have stopped providing water trucking services with no alternative solution in place. The WES sector is requesting and appealing for more water trucking services for IDPs in the state. AHA is now a crucial provider of essential social services such as water, sanitation, and hygiene in IDP gathering centers where access to water supply is severely limited. AHA is meeting the appeal by doubling the daily water supply, from 24,000 liters to 48,000 liters per day, and addressing the gap caused by other agencies stopping water trucking.
Despite AHA and other humanitarian organizations, exerting maximum efforts to address the WASH needs, the IDPs in El Fasher are facing a significant water crisis because of funding shortage, insecurity and logistical challenges in for water trucking and distribution for more IDPs.
With years of understanding the local context and presence in North Darfur, AHA is available to partner with donors and other stakeholders to provide critically needed emergency WASH services. We can be reached at https://africahumanitarian.org/get-involved/partners/
