The Conflict In The Darfur Region Of The Sudan In 2003 Had Driven Hundreds Of Thousands Of Refugees Into Eastern Chad, Where They Took Refuge In The Isolated And Poor Regions Of Hajer Hadid Alongside The Border Of Sudan.
In 2005, Aha Launched Its First Water And Sanitation Support To The Host Population Of Where It Excavated A Well Close To The Dry River Bed To Distribute Water To The Village Using A Fuel Generator And A Submersible Pump To Supply Raised Steel Water Tanks With A Capacity Of 75,000 Litres. The Village Was Installed With Thirty Water Taps, And Three Water Points. 97% Of The Project Was Completed By Aha And Handed Over By The First Quarter Of 2006
This Project Enabled A Vegetable Garden To Be Constructed Around The Tank Premises Where More Than Seventy-Five Varieties Of Fruit Trees Were Planted.
Alongside This Project, Renovation Of The Primary School Was Undertaken, By Constructing The Fence, The Kitchen And The Lavatory. Aha Took This Opportunity To Assist The Ngo ‘Ret’ To Construct A Secondary School By Providing Free Technical And Management Support.
In 2006, The Humanitarian Situation In The Country Took A Turn For The Worse With Escalation In Political Tensions And Security In Chad, Sudan And Central African Republic Plummeting. As A Result Of These, Accesses To Affected Areas Were Hugely Hampered Lowering Chances Of Humanitarian Efforts Reaching The Affected.
With The Civil War Taking Its Toll On The Economy Causing Major Unemployment, Throughout The Country, Aha Launched Its Programme Of Capacity Development Where It Created 2 Short-Term Employment Generating Projects In The Areas Of Goz Beida. Due To These Projects, Much Needed Works Were Generated For People Within The Community.
Throughout All The Challenges Faced In Those Years, Aha Remained Committed To Deliver Timely And Effecting Assistance To Those Who Needed It The Most.
