Attendees of the commemoration in Sheder Refugee Camp included Religious Leaders, Dignitaries of the Federal Government and Regional State, Ambassadors, as well as representatives from the United Nations (UN), Africa Union (AU), Administration for Refugees and Returnees Affaires (ARRA), UNHCR, and other relevant organizations. As part of the day’s events, a reservoir built by UNHCR and Lutheran World Foundation was inaugurated. The AU delegation donated books and musical instruments to the refugees in the camp.
The Chair of the Refugee Committee thanked guests for coming to the camp to understand their plight. One of the refugees shared her poignant story putting a human face on the issues touched upon by the Chair. In response, several of the invited guests made statements admiring the resilience of refugees and pledging that they will work harder to promote refugee concerns upon return to their respective work places.
The UNHCR has been commemorating World Refugee Day since 2001 to raise awareness on refugee issues. AHA Country Offices also observed the day through various events. Stay tuned for information on their commemoration of World Refugee Day!
